The Grid: Energy from fossil fuels

Non-renewable energy is that which draws on finite resources that are dwindling and will eventually run out. Fossil fuels, such as natural gas, coal and oil are not renewable, although the majority of households in the United States currently rely heavily on them for heating, cooling and transportation. These energy sources also place a heavy carbon footprint on our environment.

Off-Grid: Energy from alternative resources

Earth’s resources that can be replenished in short periods of time, alternatives to fossil fuels, are at the heart of renewable energy. Five or so generations ago, about 125 years, 90 percent of our energy needs were supplied by a renewable resource called wood. Wood is now considered an alternative energy source, bio-mass. Along with solar, wind, hydro and geo-thermal, bio-mass is one of the most widely known re-sources that fuel renewable technologies and decrease our carbon footprint.
